SENATOR GWENDOLYN BRITT The Passing of a Hero and a Friend
Dear MBFA Members,
It is with deep regret and great sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing last night of Senator Gwendolyn Britt. Senator Britt was one of Maryland's great legislative and civil rights leaders. She was an uncompromising, unapologetic, and unwavering champion for civil and human rights, including equality for Maryland's gay and lesbian community. Senator Britt lead the fight for civil marriage, steadfastly believing in civil equality even when she did not have to. As many of you may recall, Senator Britt was the lead presenter during the press conference announcing the Maryland Black Family Alliance, and was due to announce (this coming week) the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act which she was sponsoring in the Maryland legislature.
Senator Britt dedicated her life fighting for justice. She was one of this nation's key leaders during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and continued in that spirit until this day.
We have lost a great leader, but most of all we have lost a wonderful person. We will continue to honor her memory by being steadfast in our commitment to equality and our dedication to justice.
As we have more information on services, dedications, etc., we will keep you informed.
Please feel free to email us with any immediate questions.
Yours in Equality,
Elbridge James, Director
